Woodland Consolidated School is seeking support for a fleet of 18 bikes, helmets, kickstands, and curriculum.
"I am writing this letter to express my sincere interest in the Bike in PE Kindergarten program. We are a small remote school in northern Maine consisting of PK-8 students. Our current enrollment is 151 students. Behind our wonderful little school is a beautiful cross-country ski trail that is 2.1 miles long. This trail is used year around for walking/hiking, snowshoeing, XC skiing, running, and biking.
I currently have twenty 24” mountain bikes for my grades 4-6 students. Our students look forward to our bike unit every year. I was extremely surprised when I started this unit that I actually had some students that did not know how to ride a bicycle. I just took for granted all kids knew how to ride by the time they were 5 or 6 years old. It is very rewarding for these students once they grasp how to ride a bike and the success is priceless. If they are back with us the following year they are ready to hop on and go.
At this time I would love to expand this program and offer biking to our kindergarten children. My grandson had a strider bike and it was a great little bike for him to learn how to balance. He loved his little strider bike and had a hard time giving it up when it was time to graduate to a bigger bike. Biking is a big part of our family and I would love for our students to have the opportunity to appreciate biking at an early age and hopefully continue on with it throughout their adulthood.
I would be very excited if you would consider giving the younger students at Woodland Consolidated School the opportunity to have Strider Bikes in their PE program."- Susie Schloeman, PE Teacher
