South Side Academy is seeking support for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.
Dean of Students, Kristine Hunchuck, is excited to see kids rolling in the classroom soon. Kristine says, "Our physical education program strives to introduce our students to activities and skills to help our students stay physically active throughout their lives. The introduction of bike riding at the kindergarten level will benefit our student population not only physically, but mentally and academically as well.
Bike riding has many mental health benefits that would be a positive addition to the lives of our students. Riding a bike can help to reduce anxiety, and function as an anti-depressant. Being able to successfully ride a bike can help to increase a child’s self-esteem and aide in goal setting behaviors. In addition, cycling has been shown to reduce stress hormone levels within the body and by doing so, helps a child to get a more restful night’s sleep. By introducing cycling to our students, the benefits to their mental health will most certainly be a positive influence on their day to day behavior and their ability to learn while in school. Fewer behavior issues due to poor mental health, will correlate to higher test scores and increased academic performance.
The physical benefits to our students that will come from being able to ride a bike will be tremendous. It will help lower body fat levels, aide in weight management, increase metabolism and build muscle. Bike riding will improve our students posture, coordination, balance and can help strengthen their immune systems.
The All Kids Bike program will be such a valuable asset to our school. We are a K-8 building lucky enough to have a large open parking lot and we have 2 kindergarten classes that will be able to immediately use these bikes during physical education classes. Even better than that, though, with the addition of the pedal kit for each bike, we anticipate being able to use it with our first and possibly second grade students as well. The fact that the program comes with bike helmets as well will allow us to focus on not just the skill of bike riding itself, but also bike safety with our students.
We believe the students at South Side Academy would make an excellent addition to the All Kids Bike program. Our kindergarteners and staff are ready to be part of a program that helps encourage and promote confidence, mobility, joy, and healthful lifelong behaviors. We would be privileged to be a part of this amazing initiative!"
