Smee School District is seeking support for a fleet of 20 bikes, helmets, kickstands, and curriculum.
Learning to ride a bike can be a struggle and stressful for any child and parent. The purpose of receiving the bikes is to help students in kindergarten learn to ride a bike, learn safety of riding a bike, signals to use when riding a bike and to help these students learn better balance. It will impact the students in kindergarten by allowing students to learn to ride a bike on balanced bikes, which will give all students in kindergarten a lifelong activity to stay active as they grow through life. The benefits of learning to ride a bike, don’t stop with working your core and leg muscles but it is also beneficial for working out your brain. It will improve gross and fine motor skills along with social and mental skills. It helps improve gross motor skills by working on coordination/balance, endurance, and strength while pedaling, fine motor skills of gripping the handlebars, turning of their wrists when turning the bike. Bike riding also helps with full-body sensory awareness along with visual stimulation. It also helps children with their attention and focusing on the task given to them. Children that learn how to ride a bike also practice their communication skills along with their social skills. In addition, bike riding also helps children boost self-confidence because they have accomplished and learned how to do something they did not know how to do before. It is a great way to help children build self-confidence and create a bond with the person teaching them how to ride a bike.
Kindergarten students benefit from learning to ride a bike because it grows the mind, body, and soul. -- David Souhrada, PE Teacher
