Shaker Heights School is seeking support for a fleet of 30 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum.
My name is Sean Morris. I instruct and manage our amazing Elementary Physical Education Department in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Our Shaker School District is located in an inner ring suburb bordering on the city of Cleveland. In our school district we have 5 elementary buildings housing over 1,500 students. Students in our district receive Physical Education instruction Pre K to Grade 4 two times per week for a total of 90 minutes. We are also an International Baccalaureate district. As such, we focus our units of study on providing opportunities and exposure for our diverse student population to experience the many options that are available to improve and promote active living, positive social interaction, and personal identification in their quest for physical literacy. As a Physical Education teacher of 18 years, I have always endeavored to search and provide success oriented lifetime based instruction for my students. I share All Kids Bike's vision to provide instruction to all students to learn to ride a bike in kindergarten. So many of our students come from low socioeconomic situations in which they are never afforded the opportunity to own, let alone learn to ride a bike. I believe fewer kids aren't riding bikes around their neighborhoods anymore, so kids don't have the same motivation to learn to ride. I am a strong believer children need to swim, skate and cycle before grade 5 or there is little chance this will happen for them. Our kids would love it! - Sean Morris, Shaker Heights Elementary Physical Education Curriculum
