Scales Technology Academy is seeking support for a fleet of 25 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.
"My name is Bryan Bennett and I am the Physical Education Teacher at Scales Technology Academy in the Tempe Elementary School District. As their physical education teacher, specifically, I am always looking for ways to get my students excited for a lifetime of physical fitness. At Scales Technology Academy, we are a Title 1 school that believes it's our responsibility to our students to find opportunities for them to succeed in ways they never thought possible. While some of our students have the resources to learn and ride a bike, many do not. By implementing the Kindergarten Strider Bike PE Curriculum at Scales Technology Academy, every single one of our families will be positively impacted by their student learning how to ride a bike.
I have seen firsthand how well this curriculum works Before arriving in Arizona I worked in North Carolina and I was fortunate enough to have taught the Kindergarten Strider Bike PE Curriculum to over 300 students. The response I received from the students, parents and community was incredible. It was by far the most popular unit I taught at the K-2 level and the students consistently begged me to ride the bikes during class once the unit ended. The parents were even more excited, because many had tried teaching their child to ride a bike without much success and now their students were riding with confidence on their own in a short period of time. I saw an increase in the amount of students we had riding their bikes to school and witnessed more families going out on family bike rides.
In Tempe, Airizona, bike riding has been an important aspect of the community for years and will
continue to be. Our school is located in the heart of Tempe, which is one of the leading bicycle
communities in the country with 217 miles of bikeways. In addition, we have easy access to trails for mountain biking, which students can enjoy with friends and family as they get older and more proficient at riding. In 2019, the League of American Bicyclists redesignated Tempe a “Gold-Level” Bicycle Friendly Community for its commitment to improving conditions for cyclists. As our students continue to grow, it is my dream that they will continue to cycle for fitness and for pleasure within the community.
Surprisingly, there are no other schools in the state of Arizona that are implementing this curriculum. Scales Technology Academy is very excited to have a chance at being the first school in the state to implement the curriculum into the physical education program. In the future, I hope to help other schools in the district seek the support of the All Kids Bike curriculum. Soon all of the schools in our district and community will see the benefits of teaching our young students the benefits of riding a bike!" - Bryan Bennett, Physical Education Teacher
