PS 376 Felisa Rincon de Gautier School is seeking support for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 30 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.

PE Teacher, Reyes Andon, is excited to see kids rolling in the classroom soon. Reyes says: "As a highly enthusiastic and encouraging educator, I demonstrate a devout passion for instilling a love for health and wellness amongst students. I am convinced that the All Kids Bike Program will help foster a positive learning environment where students feel confident to take risks and challenge themselves to their best potential physically, and mentally. With this in mind, I am actively seeking opportunities to enhance the lives of my students to boost their performance academically, socially, and mentally, and that they appreciate the
benefits that are achieved through maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

After learning about the All Kids Bike Program, I was convinced that this program would really promote a healthy lifestyle that will help reduce and prevent risky behaviors, and certain chronic conditions that affect the overall health and wellbeing of our children. P.S 376 is located in Bushwick, Brooklyn NY, this neighborhood is one of the most impacted by COVID-19 in NYC. As a result, children’s health has worsened since the start of the pandemic.

The pandemic has created social isolation for our children which can be associated with anxiety and depression and can have implications for mental health later in life as research shows. Similarly, physical activity levels have declined drastically in communities like Bushwick, Brooklyn NY where a large number of our students live in small apartments with limited access to engage in outdoor physical activity. In like manner, research shows that obesity levels have elevated in children more than ever before. Not to mention the least, more than 80% of our student population come from economically disadvantaged families which leads to limited healthy options and makes it difficult to access resources that promote a physically active lifestyle.

One particular way to address this area of main concern in our children in Bushwick, Brooklyn NY at P.S 376 is by
providing the tools and resources to successfully adopt healthy behaviors. This includes the skills and knowledge needed to develop those behaviors that are necessary for making health promoting decisions, achieving physical and health literacy, adopting health enhancing behaviors and promoting the health of others. The All Kids Bike program is an excellent starting point to provide the skills and resources to engage in physical activity and adopt health enhancing habits so much needed amongst students. Now that all our students have returned to our school for in person learning, it opens the door for educators to speak up on behalf of their students. This includes providing the tools and resources to develop a healthy lifestyle regardless of where they live.

Additionally, I strongly believe that bike riding will help our students acquire and develop the skills needed to maintain an active lifestyle that goes beyond school hours. Bike riding is a lifetime skill that creates life lasting memories while getting the health related benefits of an active lifestyle. That's why it is extremely important to instill these healthy habits when they are young to help them to establish a strong foundation full of health related skills and habits that will help prevent and reduce the risk of risky behaviors and certain chronic conditions. In like manner, riding a bike not only improves physical fitness, it also supports their learning development and mental health that is so much needed at this present moment. Research shows that students who are physically active before school, like riding a bike to school, are more focused and ready to learn in the classroom, compared with those who are driven."
