Pelion Elementary School is seeking support for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.
PE Teacher, Colby Coulter, is excited to see kids rolling in the classroom soon.
Colby says: "Our afterschool programs have tripled in student participation over the last three years. We now have an average of nearly 200 students, 1/3rd of our population, participating in after school activities. We currently offer an after school running program and archery team. Our running program is year-round with Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons available for students to stay active all year long. Our competitive archery team just came off an incredible season where they won the state championship and are traveling to Myrtle Beach for the National Championship. I share these accolades with you only to make the point that not only is our content available, it is delivered with high expectations for our students and they take on the challenges with tremendous PRIDE.
The one drawback of these afterschool programs is that, legally, I can only allow grades 2-5 to participate in them. That leaves my younger students with a void in area of something exciting to get them interested in physical education and their own personal health. I believe this program is the answer to filling that void. I have seen our kindergarteners do some incredible things in our gymnastics, speed stacking, and other sport units. I believe they will not only be successful in this bike education program, but will use what they’ve learned to continue being physically active outside of the classroom. That is the ultimate goal after all; to have our kids take what we learn and use it outside of the classroom to improve themselves.
I am writing this application to you with a smile on my face because I can already see my student’s faces when we begin this program. The initial excitement when they see the bikes, the frustration when they struggle to grasp a concept, the concentration to improve, and the joy the first time they lift their feet to the pedals and travel on their own. Please help me deliver this experience to our kids here in Pelion."
