North Star Elementary in Bend, OR is seeking support for a fleet of 24 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum.
At North Star Elementary we would strongly benefit from a [Kindergarten PE Bike Program]. Our school is new this year. Being a new school means exciting energy to build traditions and a focus that will create a love for being at school.
Our mission is for our students to have a strong foundation in the following areas:
Commitment: Encouraging students to participate in a variety of activities and responsibilities within our school community, contributing to a greater purpose. Compassion: Fostering an environment where students feel and demonstrate empathy and concern for others.
Courage: Developing the capacity within students to venture, persevere, and take on challenges.
Curiosity: Creating opportunities for students to eagerly explore and investigate the world around them.
Students get to come to physical education 3 times a week. We are school who has 30% of our students on free and reduced lunch. This means that a lot of our students may not have the funding to be able to have a bike on their own. As a PE teacher it is my goal and vision to create healthy habits that will continue past PE class. One of those things to support health outside of school is a love for biking. By having the [All Kids Bike Kindergarten PE Program] it will allow me to build a program within our school to teach students how to ride bicycles. Part of the National Physical Education Standards is that students become physically literate. This means that they build confidence and learn strategies to live a healthy lifestyle as they get older.
In the spring we have a bike night where local organizations come to support a family night around biking and bike safety. During this event if there are students who don’t have Striders or bikes they will be able to check out a bike for the night as long as they have gone through my program you will be giving us. This will be a great opportunity to get more students and families involved in our bike night.
I appreciate the opportunity to get this [Kindergarten PE Program] for my growing school. It will be so exciting to know that as a team we will all be helping students have one more way to live a healthy life. Thank you so much for creating this awesome program. -- Jenny White, PE Teacher
