Steamboat Springs, CO
Mountain Village Montessori Charter School is seeking support for a fleet of 23 bikes, helmets, kickstands, and curriculum.

On behalf of the Mountain Village Montessori Charter School, I am excited to apply to All Kids Bike to include a bike component in our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes. Steamboat is known as Bike Town USA with an extensive bicycling infrastructure throughout the community and surrounding area. We have paved bike paths, dirt lanes, and single track trails that are car free and good for young cyclists.
Because we are a bike-friendly community, Some students know how to ride bicycles by Kindergarten but the vast majority and children from lower socio-economic backgrounds are left out of this important activity. As All Kids Bike knows, the physical, emotional, and social benefits of cycling are numerous and we must ensure that all of our students can participate in this activity. We have a gymnasium at the school for starting our novice students and there are dirt trails around the school and adjacent neighborhood where students who progress to more advanced skill levels can venture out. Our PE teacher is excited to incorporate this program into the curriculum and believes the families will support and endorse this program.
In addition, MVMCS has between six and eight students who receive special education services.  All of these children would benefit from the Strider bike riding experience. In addition, the COVID Pandemic has been especially difficult for our students who would benefit from the physical exercise and mental confidence the All Kids Bike bikes, converter kits and PE curriculum provide.
We are a Montessori-based school and one of the tenants of the Montessori method of learning is involving older students in leading and helping younger students learn the skills in all areas of our curriculum. Our students are trained to assist younger and less skilled students. The bike riding curriculum will provide another fun and engaging way to reinforce this tenant which teaches responsibility, social interactions, leadership and skill mastery (having to teach something helps to instill mastery of the skill). -- Michael Girodo, Head of School
