Inez Elementary is seeking support for a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.
"Two years ago, a parent of a second-grader told me his son had not yet learned to ride a bike, partially due to safety concerns in his neighborhood. Inez Elementary School is a small Title I school located in one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Albuquerque New Mexico. As a result, open stretches of car-less roads are few and far between.
As a physical education teacher, the thought that safety could be a hindrance to my student’s discovery of the freedom and joy that comes from learning to ride a bike has been the driving force for me to find a way to bring biking to the students at Inez.
The All Kids Bike program would be an ideal way to provide our students with the confidence that comes from learning a life-changing activity like biking. Who doesn’t remember the feeling of accomplishment that comes from actually making it down the street without falling for the first time? That event is a pivotal moment in any child’s life and paves the way for increased bravery, grit, and confidence.
In my 22 years of teaching PE at Inez, my focus has been to provide students with a multitude of movement experiences with the hope that they will find the one or two that will become part of their health and wellness journeys for life. As a result of grant writing and support from our incredible Community School partners, students at Inez learn to rock climb, run obstacles, pitch a tent, cast a fishing pole, golf, play frisbee golf, circuit train, and inline skate/scooter.
As someone who cycles for enjoyment and health, having the ability to teach our students to ride a bike in the safe, structured, curriculum-based way provided by the All Kids Bike program would be the icing on the Inez PE cake.
After the incredibly difficult year, we have experienced living in the COVID world, we have been reminded repeatedly of the importance of physical and emotional wellness, and have been so grateful for our community partners and organizations interested in supporting the well-being of our students. Indeed, it is with the full support of the Inez Community School Council that we are able to pursue bringing the All Kids Bike Program to Inez. Together, we are imagining the excitement our kindergartners would have learning to ride a “two-wheel bike”. This will truly provide the students with a sense of confidence, create a positive memory of a great experience at school, and set them on a path of lifelong health and wellness!
We appreciate your consideration. Fly High Rockets!" - Michael Anderson, Physical Education Specialist
