Great Salt Bay Community School is seeking support for a fleet of 20 bikes, helmets, kickstands, teacher instructor bike, online teacher training, and curriculum.

Great Salt Bay Community School serves the Towns of Damariscotta, Newcastle & Bremen, Maine. We are located in the Mid Coast Region of the State.  We have 170 K-3 students. For the past 18 years, the Great Salt Bay Community School Bus Drivers have hosted a Bicycle Safety Rodeo for all students in grades K-3. We noticed a growing need for students to be taught how to operate their bicycles in a safe manner on the roadways. More frequently, we are discovering that many of the students do not know how to ride a bike. Many do not even own a bike. We have about 10 varying sizes of bikes with training wheels that we loan to the students who do not have a bike, for the day of our Rodeo. After doing some research, we feel  that the Strider Balance Bike would be a smarter option for training. When we are finished training, the OT/PT teachers could use them during their sessions. The GSB Bus Drivers are hoping that you would donate ten bikes to us. We have always done our own  fundraising in our community to provide all the students with a new bicycle helmet. We teach them the Rules of the Road, and then spend a day in the parking lot during school hours  teaching them how to ride their bikes safely, and successfully complete a skills course. -- Debby Newell, Transportation Supervisor
