GLENN LIVINGSTON ELEMENTARY

Cody, WY
Glenn Livingston Elementary is seeking support for a fleet of 22 bikes, helmets, kickstands, and curriculum.

Living in Wyoming, our opportunities for outdoor recreation are endless. We are fortunate enough to have space to roam and recreate.  As a PE teacher, my philosophy is to give the students enough skills and knowledge so they can be active for their lifetime. This not only includes individual activities and team sports, but the use of our outdoor spaces for lifetime outdoor recreation opportunities. Unfortunately, the number of students who have not been exposed to some of these opportunities is disappointing. One of the fantastic opportunities right on the edge of town is miles and miles of biking trails. The trails range from beginner to advance, from leisure trails to dropping off rocks, hitting jumps and speeding around a pump track. On summer days, I should see these trails lined with kids playing the days away on their bikes. Instead, trails are fairly quiet, and even more shocking is the number of kids who don’t know how to ride a bike. I feel it is my job, as a PE teacher and outdoor enthusiast, to teach our kiddos not only the skill of riding a bike, but the lifelong enjoyment and health benefits they can get out of biking.
Therefore, I have come to you to help assist me in my vision.
I have come to you to help me get these little tikes pedaling down the trail feeling strong, empowered, and full of life. I am a firm believer in getting kids active at a very young age. It helps instill the love and passion for being active, healthy, and in the outdoors. Many kids will thrive on a bike where they may not thrive in a team sport. Biking is a very individual activity that can reach so many of our non-team sport students. I would greatly appreciate the help and support to get our littlest kiddos on a bike, so as they grow, I can teach them how to use the endless Wyoming landscape that we call home and they have an activity they can do for life.  -- Emmie Shramm, Physical Education & Health Teacher
