Fairbanks Road Elementary School is seeking support for a fleet of 25 bikes, helmets, kickstands, and curriculum.
Biking/cycling has been a passion of mine since I was a kid growing up in the country of Western New York. It was how my brother and I got from one place to another, how we exercised without knowing it, and how we explored the world around us on our own. Little did I know then that I would still be just as fascinated by it 30 years later and still bike for most of those same reasons. Unfortunately, I am seeing less and less kids riding bikes that same way.
I am an Elementary Physical Education teacher, working with students in grades K-4. Each year I see the decline in self-confidence, independence, imagination, and creativity. More of our students are spending time sitting at their desks in front of a screen in school, and then sitting on their couch in front of a screen at home. We need to get these kids active and outside again and restore the importance of movement and play in their lives. Empowering Kindergarteners with the confidence and skills to ride a bike does exactly that. I am excited to be able to offer this to our students and reignite a passion for the outdoors and cycling! - Brian Lang, PE Teacher
