El Camino Real Academy is seeking support for a fleet of 25 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum.
"The purpose of this request is to provide the opportunity for our kindergarten and 1st grade Physical Education classes to learn how to ride a bike. Which will increase their physical and brain development to aid in their academic achievement in the classroom. El Camino Real Academy (ECRA) is a K-8, Title I school located in the south side of Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have the highest percent of economically disadvantaged students with 100% free and reduced lunch. With an enrollment of 853, ECRA has the largest population of students of any school in the district other than the 2 comprehensive High School.
Other statistics: 94% Hispanic
13% Students with Disabilities
The impact of this request would be tremendous. Not only will students be learning a healthy lifelong physical activity, it will be providing them the ability/skill for later in life to have transportation and freedom. It will also impact student’s self-esteem. Even at the young age of 5, we have students in our classroom that struggle with their self-image and esteem due to their economic and social backgrounds. Providing them the opportunity to successfully learn how to ride a bike will have a lasting effect on their lives by giving them the feeling of accomplishing a skill that will not be provided for them at home. The best part of my day is when a student smiles and says, “look maestra…I did it” and learning how to ride a bike will do just that." - Debra Ledford, PE Teacher
