Edge Academy is seeking support for a fleet of 25 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum.

Edge Academy is located in the heart of downtown Akron, OH and is a kindergarten through 8th grade urban charter school. I am writing this letter on behalf of the administration and students as we look to improve community safety and health through the Learn-To-Ride Program. As an Akron resident, cyclist, and bike mechanic, I see the need for proper bike education to improve community safety and health. According to data collected from 2012-2014, the majority of Akron residents ride bicycles and the majority of bike crashes occur among children. The Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study reported that only 33% of Akron residents have no interest in biking. They also reported that 37% of all crashes involve children, and most crashes occur during after-school hours, 3pm-8pm. This data suggests that bike training and safety incorporated in PE programs could lower the chance of children-involved crashes. At the Edge Academy, we have already started the momentum for bike safety, and we want our kindergarten students to continue as recipients of the Learn-To-Ride Program. We have incorporated a leadership group, Bike Shop, for interested students. A group of 10-12 students meet twice a week and learn basic bike maintenance and safety tips. With this program, our kindergarten students will partake in a bicycle riding and safety unit in their PE classes. We will utilize indoor and outdoor spaces to practice skill training and would take cycling field trips using Akron’s Freedom Trail, a trail that commemorates the path of the Underground Railroad through Akron. Across the street from our school, the 10 mile paved bike trail would serve in cross- curricular and experiential learning for our students in both science, history, and physical education. In closing, the Learn-To-Ride program will thrive at the Edge Academy. With qualified staff, diverse riding spaces, and an existing bike program, our kindergarten students will fulfill your mission as proud recipients of the Kindergarten PE Program. - Ruth Chapman, PE & Health Teacher
