Dell Rapids Public School in Dell Rapids, SD is seeking support for a fleet of 26 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum.
We will run a combination program where students will participate during Physical Education time and before/after school time. The proposed Strider bike unit would also be taught as a school wide interdisciplinary unit to 85 (Kindergarten Grade) students. Core classes would study different aspects of heath/fitness and present them in their classes. For example, science class would study human anatomy, health eating/snacks, and how to use technology while exercising. Social studies may discuss the history of biking and how society has viewed fitness over the past 50 years. Math class would study angles and balance used while using the Strider bike.
The students in our district enjoy by location some opportunities for life-long fitness. I believe the units taught should lead to an active, physically fit, life-long learner. This [All Kids Bike Program] has a life-long aspect and opportunities attached to it.
By experiencing such a unit, learners can make decisions to participate in such activities the rest of their lives. By not offering these units, some students would never participate due to the cost or non-participation.
We will promote the [All Kids Bike] Program through our Kindergarten students and our parents. We will also open it up to all grades to participate. Our Kindergarten will be considered our "pilot" program. We will invite parents in to meet at the start of the program to inform them of expectations of proper care and use of a Strider bike. - Shannon Tjaden, PE Teacher
