C.W. Harris Elementary is seeking support for a fleet of 20 bikes, helmets, kickstands and curriculum. Students and families at my school may be faced with challenges that cause them to feel like they are bound within their immediate surroundings without the ability to explore outside of their city, neighborhood, or even their block. Learning to ride a bike will give someone the confidence and the skills to travel further which will open new opportunities. This said, many families in my school’s community lack the means to purchase bicycles for their children. Having bicycles to learn on in a setting where children are comfortable, happy and supported would be the ideal place to foster these skills that they would otherwise be deprived of.
One of the first concepts taught to children when learning to ride is to pick a bicycle that fits. Fortunately, we have two different sets of bicycles at C.W. Harris. There is one set of small balance bikes that fit children that are three or four years old. These bikes are used with the pre-kindergarten aged students. We also have a set of bikes that we use with the second-grade students as part of a district wide program. The kindergarten students at my school are in a position where they are too physically developed to ride our balance bikes and not developed enough to ride our larger bikes. Having a set of bikes sized specifically for kindergarten aged children will allow the kids who grow through my school to have a chance to learn bike riding skills for three or four straight years. In my ten years of teaching experience, I believe this amount of exposure could mean nearly 100 percent of my students will be able to safely and confidently ride a bike by the completion of second grade. -- Mike Richards, PE Teacher
