East Hill Elementary School
Canajoharie, NY
East Hill Elementary of Canajoharie Central School District is seeking support for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum.

PE Teacher, Kevin Stuttle is excited to get kids rolling in his classroom soon. Kevin says, "Part of living a physically active lifestyle and becoming a physically literate individual is the exposure, practice, and acquisition of skills that would increase physical activity levels outside of school. Living in a rural area in Upstate New York, active transport is a readily available means of transportation, due to the lack of public tranportation, and the availability of space to participate in these activities. Opportunities to walk, run, skate, and bike are abound in our area through the existence of open sidewalks, parks, and a paved trail that runs through town on old train tracks. However, many students do not take advantage of this, or do not have the skills and knowledge to participate in bicycling.

Receiving this program would give the students in our area the opportunity to learn how to bike safely. Through gaining competence in the skill, more children in the area would be able to bike and become more physically active. In schools, it gives our students a chance to move and find meaning in a skill set that is directly applicable to their lives by sparking joy and creating competence in biking. We would be able to pair with our local law enforcement to run bike safety weekends of "Bike Rodeos" to promote safe participation in biking in our area. We would also run racing events during the school day for the Kindergarten and First Grade students who wish to test their skills in a fun and competitive environment."

"Our mission as physical educators is to develop physical literacy in our student through menaingful, fun and challenging experiences. Adding the Strider Bikes to our elementary school physical education curriculum would add a meaninful, fun, and challenging unit for the students."
