"As soon as I saw the post about this program on Facebook I instantly fell in love with the idea. I would love to start this biking program at Ottawa Elementary School for many reasons. As a PE teacher it is my goal to teach my students ways to stay healthy and active for the rest of their lives. Biking is a perfect way to stay healthy, and have fun at any age.
About 60% of the students at Ottawa Elementary are on free/reduced lunch. We have a lot of families from low socio-economic backgrounds, therefore I know that many of them miss out on opportunities for special things like bikes and learning to ride one. Many of our students struggle with reading, and basic concepts and I know that this biking program will help their mind, body, and soul, which in return will help them succeed more in school.
In a time when technology is taking over, and students minds only focus for so long, teachers need to stay on our toes to bring exciting and new ideas to our programs. A biking program has never been done at this school and I think it would be a fresh idea that inspires our students to get active and to play outside and get off the technology.
I would be so excited to be able to bring this program to our school and begin to help generations of children learn to bike, and teach them that exercise can be as easy and fun as riding a bike." - Jessica Leenhouts, PE Teacher
