Oglethorpre Avenue Elementary School Athens, GA
BikeAthens is seeking support for a complete Kindergarten PE Program, including a fleet of 24 Strider AKB-Specific Bikes, helmets, pedal conversion kits, one Strider 20 Bike for teacher instruction, and curriculum for Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary in Athens, Georgia.
BikeAthens Executive Director, Scott Long, is excited to see kids rolling in the classroom soon. Scott says, "The Athens-Clarke Safe Cycling Association, Inc. (d/b/a “BikeAthens”) is pleased to partner with Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School (OAES) to ensure every OAES Wildcat becomes a competent cyclist through the All Kids Bike program. Located in Athens, Georgia, OAES is a Title I school where 81.98% of students are eligible for free and reduced price meals. A school-based cycling education program will help ensure every Wildcat experiences the many benefits of learning how to bike.
BikeAthens promotes cycling, walking, and transit as solutions to transportation needs in Athens through education, advocacy, and community service. In addition to safe cycling classes taught by League Cycling Instructors, BikeAthens also offers bike maintenance skill building to the community. BikeAthens works to build equity in transportation and believes affordable, accessible transportation is a critical component of social and economic mobility. The mission of All Kids Bike aligns with the work of BikeAthens by focusing on foundational skill-building at an early age.
Bringing the first All Kids Bike program to OAES is of particular importance to the larger cycling community in Athens because there are currently several miles of natural surface trails in the woods behind the school that are open to bikes during non-school hours. The existing trail system will provide an amazing opportunity to expand upon the All Kids Bike program, and ensure students have the skills they need to safely navigate both natural and built environments on their bikes.
BikeAthens also has a strong, ongoing partnership with the Athens Chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA Athens), a local non-profit that is committed to increasing equitable access to natural surface cycling, and growing healthy and connected communities through intimate experiences in nature and the development of active, outdoor lifestyles. SORBA Athens has worked in partnership with school administration to help maintain the existing trails, which are open to bikes during non-school hours. SORBA Athens is fully committed to supporting an All Kids Bike Program to increase opportunities for natural surface riding and, in partnership with BikeAthens, will coordinate trail work days and provide other support to ensure the success of the program.
Having a passionate and professional physical education teacher instruct students in bike handling skills, as early as kindergarten, we can ensure that more children are able to fully enjoy the school’s existing trail system, gain confidence, build independence and enjoy the many benefits of an active lifestyle. Bike Athens is proud to submit this application on behalf of OAES and lend its support and expertise for All Kids Bike."
